In 1860, he was presumably a resident of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, or vicinity, although he is not found in that census. Per his obituary in the Pittsburgh Daily Post, he was a lifelong resident of the Pittsburgh area.
A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted at an unrecorded but almost certainly overstated age in Lancaster November 14, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Negley, Hardin County, Kentucky, December 8 as a private with Co. K, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry. Per his pension index, he also served with Co. F, dates as yet unknown. He discharged presumably by surgeon's certificate to date October 16, 1862, but the reason for the early discharge is as yet unknown. His obituaries erroneously place him in Co. E. Although some members of the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry enlisted in Pittsburgh, the company register is clear that Samuel enlisted in Lancaster.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Allegheny County July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh July 19 as a private with Co. D, 193rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged September 18, 1864, at Wilmington, Delaware, where the regiment was serving railroad guard duty. He would have discharged with his company on November 19, 1864, but received permission to enlist for another term of service.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Wilmington September 15 [sic], 1864, as a corporal with an independent company of the 97th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 17, 1865.
A machinist/stationary engineer by occupation, he died at his home in Pittsburgh. The only family mentioned in his obituaries is a brother John.
