Mr. AVIS ADKINS, age 77, a resident of Oxford, N.C., died suddenly at Granville Medical Center early Sunday morning, May 1, 2005. He was the son of the late Millard and Vera McComas Adkins. Mr. Adkins was born in Huntington, W.Va., and was a resident of Durham for 20 years before moving to Oxford 25 years ago.

He served in the Navy in Michigan during WWII. He was employed as a manager of Owens-Illinois Glass Co. for 30 years before retiring in 1978. Mr. Adkins was a former member of Dexter Baptist Church in Oxford and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Creedmoor, N.C.

Mr. Adkins will be remembered for his love of gospel music, originating the Dixie Melody Boys and serving as manager and lead singer. His name has been entered in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as originator of the Dixie Melody Boys. He was also the lead singer for the Nobleman Quartet, which he originated in Huntington, W.Va., over 45 years ago. Mr. Adkins was a Mason and then became a Shriner.

Surviving are his wife, Vickie Turner Adkins; daughters, Linda Adkins Early and husband, Steve, of Marietta, Ga., and Joann Adkins of Hillsborough, N.C.; stepdaughter, Susan Allen of Hillsborough; five grandchildren, Chris Early, currently a freshman at the University of Alabama, Meghan Early, a freshman at St. Francis High School in Alpharetta, Ga., Ashley Broughton, a nursing student at Durham Tech, Josh Hughes, currently attending Hawley Middle School, and Mikey Faircloth, currently attending Cameron Park Elementary School; and one great-grandchild, Jeremy Toler.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Clements Funeral Chapel, Durham, N.C., with the Rev. Neil Woodlief officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home.
