Peter Christian Burgner, Sr. was born February 14, 1773 in Elizabeh Twp, Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania. He died June 9, 1824 in Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co. Tennessee. He is the "Progenitor" of the Burgner family that settled in Washington and Greene Co’s., Tennessee.

Peter Burgner was married on 18 November 1796 in Woodstock, Shenandoah Co. Virginia to Elizabeth Cline, daughter of John Cline and Ann Elizabeth Armstrong Cline. Reference: Shenandoah Co. Virginia Marriage Book 1772-1853, Page 78.

Ann Elizabeth Armstrong Cline (1753-1833) came with Peter Christian Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth to Washington and Greene Co.’s, Tennessee where she died on 16 June 1833 in Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co. Tennessee. The father John Cline was deceased circa 1801 in Shenandoah Co. Virginia.

On 13 September 1796, Christian Burgner, Sr. and his wife, Anna Maria Burkhart sold to Peter Burgner a half lot in No. 155 listed on the Plat Map for Woodstock, Virginia for the sum of five pounds. On 7 January 1799, Peter Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth, purchased from Matthais Zehrung and his wife, Rebecca Lot No. 102. On 8 January 1799, Peter Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth sold to Daniel Shafer, two half lots, No. 155 and 102 for one hundred & fifty pounds in current money of Virginia..

No other land records can be found for Peter Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth living in Shenandoah Co., Virginia, as they migrated to East Tennessee. We do know that they did settle in East Tennessee in Washington and Greene Co’s. Tennessee in 1810. From other evidence they could have been in Washington Co., Tennessee as early as 14 April 1808?

It is certain that they were in East Tennessee by 2 July 1810 because Peter Burgner was allotted 200 acres of land lying Sixth District in the County of Washington. State of Tennessee, Grant #1571, issued by William Blount, Secretary of the State of Tennessee

On 13 January 1812, Peter Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth sold to Jacob Spore 200 acres of land lying in the Sixth District of Washington Co., Tennessee for the sum of $1000.00, Deed Book 13, page 295.

On 31 December 1812, Peter Burgner and his wife, Elizabeth purchased from Adam Gann 83 acres of land lying in District One of Greene Co., Tennessee.(This is land is located in the Horse Creek Valley on Horse Creek, Greene Co.,Tennessee) He also owed land in Washington Co., Tennessee as evidence by land sales recorded by signed deeds.

He lived at Philadelphia, Washington Co., Tennessee after returning from Waynesville, Haywood Co. North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Cobb on 10 March 1829 in Abbeville, Abbeville Co. South Carolina. John C. Burgner filed for divorce on October 1849. The divorce was granted on 22 June 1850 on grounds of her infidelity.

2. Peter Burgner, Jr. born 25 Feb. 1800, Woodstock, Virginia, died on 10 August 1828, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee. He married Eve Broyles on 30 March 1824 in Greene Co. Tennessee.

3. Elizabeth Burgner born 15 July 1803, Woodstock, Virginia, died on 4 Sept. 1854, Charleston, Coles Co. Illinois. She married William G. Waddle on 27 June, 1824 in Greene Co. Tennessee.

4. Henry Burgner born 27 Feb. 1806, Woodstock, Virginia, died on 6 Jan. 1889, Denver, Adams Co., Colorado at his daughter’s, Mrs. Charles Swatzell residence. He married Abigail Painter on 10 December, 1829, Greene Co. Tennessee.

5. Jacob F. Burgner born 25 Nov. 1808, Woodstock, Virginia, died on 23 March 1865, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee. He married Jane Wilson on 2 April 1838 in Greene Co. Tennessee.

6. Christian Burgner born 11 Sept. 1811, Washington Co., Tennessee, died on 15 Sept. 1886, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee. He married Malinda E. Fullen on 26 January, 1840 In Greene Co. Tennessee.

7. Mary C. Burgner born 27 May 1816, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee, died on 6 January 1879, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee. She married Jefferson Broyles on 21 September 1831 in Greene Co., Tennessee.

8. Daniel F. Burgner born 30 July 1817, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee, died on 2 February 1902, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee. He and his wife, Camola are buried in the Burgner-Snapp Cemetery, a private family cemetery located on his homestead. He married Camola T. Snapp on 27 April 1843 in Greene Co. Tennessee.

9. Sophia Burgner born 12 August 1820/1822, Horse Creek Valley, Greene Co., Tennessee, died in 11 March 1882 at San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda Co. California, buried at Mountain View Cemetery. NOTE: Her memorial stone states she was born in the year 1822, which is incorrect, as it should state she was born in 1820? Sophia Burgner married Meriwether Whitlock aka "Wilhoit" on 25 January, 1838 in Washington Co. Tennessee. Sophia Burgner and her husband, Meriwether, also lived in Coles Co., Illinois, and then moved to McHenry Co., Illinois. In the 1840 Ceneus for Coles Co. Illinois he is listed as a "Gold Seeker" Her husband, Meriwether Whitlock, moved to Placerville, El Dorado Co. California circa 1848/49. He is listed in the 1850 federal census as a "Miner" in Placerville according to the 1850 Federal Census. Sophia did not get to California until sometime in the early 1860's?
