Paul Anthony McGarry was born in Warren, PA., in 1928. He passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015 in Ocean Springs, MS. Paul was one of 11 children born to a homemaker and barber. He spent the first twenty six years of his life in one of the coldest parts of the country and often told stories many have heard of walking miles through snow with holes in his shoes but, this time, the stories were true. Growing up desperately poor was a driving force of his determination to provide others with exceptional medical care his own family could never afford. By 1954 he had his medical degree from Temple University and headed south. During an internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans he met his one true love, Mary Alice Rupp, his "Al". They had many similar interests. Both were deeply devoted Catholics from humble backgrounds whose paths were headed in the same direction. They only realized it was side by side when Al became the first nurse to stand up to the doctor whose mere presence made others scatter. They married in 1955 and for the next 5 years traveled from New Orleans to Lafayette and then to Florida where he joined the Air Force, earned the rank of Captain, and continued his life's work to help others. Florida seemed the ideal sunny and warm location until, for the first time in decades, it snowed in Miami. They returned to New Orleans where he spent many years doggedly pursing more education, constantly learning, and, for a period, teaching others how to better help their fellow man. His training, certifications, and unending passion to assist in times of need brought him to Mississippi where he began a long and devoted career as a Coast pathologist. Along the way he met and worked with many who found his serious nature, staunch attention to detail, and relentless determination to provide answers an inspiration. He was the driving force behind those who were, are, and will be carrying on his legacy to bring everyone the answers they so desperately need. His passing is deeply mourned by his three loving children, Pat, Katie, and Kevin, and four grandchildren, Jacqueline, Franciscka, Stanley Paul, and Kaitlinn. He will be desperately missed by so many who have expressed their condolences and their own personal loss of someone they highly respected and dearly loved. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 11am at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street in New Orleans, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery #3, 3421 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. Condolences may be expressed online at www.schoenfh.com.
