He was born Jan. 14, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Glenn and Betty (née Wallace) Donley. He later moved to West Union, West Virginia, and graduated from Doddridge High School.
James then joined the service and met the love of his life, Gail Britt. Together they moved to Elyria, where they resided.
James served in the U.S. Marine Corps with one tour of duty in Vietnam.
He retired from Ford Motor Co. in 1997 after 30 ½ years; he was a quality control inspector.
He was a member of the Lorain Rifle and Pistol Club and lifetime member of the NRA.
Always passionate about the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. James also liked watching sports, especially football.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Gail; son Stephen Donley of Elyria; siblings John Donley of Elizabeth, West Virginia, Eddie (Peg) Donley of West Union, West Virginia, Joanne (Terry) Ross of West Union, West Virginia, and Palma Keppinger of Washington; loving mother-in-law, Bonnie Britt of Ruggles; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Donley; and a sister, Donna Lewis.
Service will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London, with Chad Britt officiating. Friends will be greeted 11 a.m. Saturday until the service. Burial will follow in Ashland County Memorial Park with military honors.
