Nathan Davis Stanwood was the son of Jacob Stanwood and his 2nd wife Sally Caldwell Stanwood. In 1820 the family moved to Augusta Maine where he grew up and eventually married Martha J. Delano in 1844. Martha died three years later in 1847.

He was a shopkeeper, itinerant daguerreotypist and gold miner. In 1849, he move to California and mined in Calaveras until 1852. He then partnered in a salmon fishing business and retail meat business. He remarried in January, 1857 to Emily Barrell. (who was also from Maine) She traveled to California to marry Stanwood and they had two children: a son Elijah born in 1860 and a daughter; Edith born 1864. Mr. Stanwood later worked in the San Francisco Post Office. In 1867 he served as a delegate in the Alabama Constitutional Convention and as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives.
