Father Anctil was born in West Warwick on May 9, 1916, the son of Isadore and Julie (Girard) Anctil. After attending St. Jean Baptiste Elementary School in West Warwick, he entered the Eymard Seminary in Suffern, New York, and then attended Blessed Sacrament Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio. He was ordained a priest of the Fathers of the Blessed Sacrament on December 18, 1943.
In 1945, Fr. Anctil moved back to the Eymard Seminary to teach literature, poetry and public speaking. He was also spiritual advisor to the area sisters. On November 1, 1947, he became pastor of Notre Dame Parish in Chicago, Illinois. He was also confessor to six convents of sisters and, on weekends, assistant pastor of St. Louis Parish in Chicago. He was also the director of the Catholic Youth Adoration Society for 13 years.
In 1962, Fr. Anctil moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin, to teach English, give lectures, and coordinate retreats. In 1969, he left the Fathers of the Blessed Sacrament fo become a parish priest in the Diocese of Superior, and was incardinated by Bishop George A. Hammes on June 20, 1975.
Father Anctil was appointed assistant pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows, Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and temporary pastor of St. Louis Church, Washburn, Wisconsin. In 1971, he became pastor of St. Michael's Church, Iron River, Wisconsin, St. Mary's Church, Port Wing, Wisconsin, and St. Francis Xavier Church in Herbster, Wisconsin. In 1973, he was appointed pastor of St. Augustine Church in Harrison, Wisconsin, and St. John the Baptist in Bloomville, Wisconsin, where he served for eight years. From 1981 to 1992, though retired, he continued to serve area churches, convents and nursing homes in the Diocese of Superior in Wisconsin.
In 1992, Father Anctil returned home to Coventry. He served as senior priest at St. Vincent de Paul Church. At this time he also served as the Chaplain for the Msgr. Peter Blessing Council Knights of Columbus in Coventry. In 1999, he was the first Council Chaplain to receive the Knights of Columbus Chaplain Award known as the Bishop Louis Gelineau Award. He was much beloved by the Blessing Council and its members. Not long before he passed away, Father Anctil gave a very generous donation of a statue of Knights of Columbus founder Venerable Father Michael McGivney to the Blessing Council. Whenever Brother Knights and Squires look upon the statue, they remember the wonderful memory of Father Anctil and all he gave to the Knights and to his parishioners.
