Mrs. A.J. Moe, Hospital Co-Founder, Dies Suddenly

Mrs. Anton J. Moe, 80, co-founder of the Moe Hospital in Sioux Falls, died suddenly of a heart attack at her home at 518 S. Dakota Ave., Sunday noon.

She had lived in Sioux Falls since 1918, the year before she and her late husband founded their hospital here.

Dr. and Mrs. Moe had operated a hospital at Heron Lake, Minn., for 16 years before coming to Sioux Falls.

Rites Tuesday

Funeral Services will be held at the Banton Funeral Home at 2p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Alvin N. Rodness officiating. Dr. Carl Youngsdahl will be organist, Mrs. Norman Stordahl will be vocalist. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Born in Viroqua, Wis., April 8, 1872, Frances (Fannie) Favor married to Dr. Moe there in 1897. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Moe was graduated from NINS Normal School at Elgin, Ill. She became a registered nurse following her graduation from the Chicago Training School for Nurses.

In 1902, Dr. and Mrs. Moe moved to Heron Lake and built and founded the Southwestern Minnesota Hospital. Mrs. Moe acted as business manager, superintendent and nurse. They moved to Sioux Falls 16 years later when the Heron Lake Hospital became too small to successfully handle area patients.

Mrs. Moe also served as business manager and superintendent of Moe Hospital.

Sold Hospital

She sold the hospital building to the Policyholders National Life Insurance Company in 1940, one year after the death of her husband.

Long active in First Lutheran Church affairs, Mrs. Moe had served for many years as an officer of the church's Ladies Aid. She was also a long-time member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two sons, Edgar Alan, Sioux Falls, and Anton J., Los Angeles; two nieces, Mrs. J. Horton Johnson, Sioux Falls; and Mrs. Harold Reese, Richland Center, Wis.; three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
