Harry Peter Demski 77, died Wednesday, May 29,1996 at Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit from complications due to a spinal cord injury that happened at his home in Midland. He was surrounded by his wife and 4 children.
Harry ws born Feb 13, 1919 in Larkin Twp., the son of Josephine Gehoski and Peter Demski. He married Hazel Marie Uland on June 26, 1943 at St Brigid's Church. Harry and Hazel owned the Red Bird Cafe in Saginaw. He was a lifelong business man in Midland where he owned and operated Pure Oil Gas Stations on the Circle and Eastman at Saginaw Roads for many years. He then opened Northtown Rental and U Haul on Eastman Road. He also worked for Fisher Contracting.
He started racing outboard boats in the 1940's. His racing career spanned over 20 years and many states. In 1958 he won the Canadian Championship and the world Championship. He also won many state and regional races. Few drivers held the Canadian and World title at the same time. In 1994 he was inducted into the Midland County Sports Hall of Fame, which he was very proud of. He was also a member of the Sturgeon Creek Beagle Club and traveled all over the states with his beagles. He taught himself how to play the banjo when he was a child and played with the Flint Banjo Club. They played parades and festivals around the state. He was also a member of the Folk Music Society with his wife. In May 1992 he was presented a certificate from The Midland Geneology Society for one of the first families to settle in Midland. Harry is survived by his wife, four children seven grandchildren 2 brothers Lewis and Dale. He was predeceased by a sister Gwendolyn and brother Raymond. He will be buried from Assumption of the BVM Church and in New Calvary Cemetery.
