Officer Charles Phipps III, 33, was killed early Friday morning, near Joy and Southfield, Detroit, in what appeared to be an attempted carjacking.
Officer Phipps, who was off-duty and in his own mini van, was shot multiple times in the head and back early Friday as he was out celebrating the birth of his second son, Cameron, who had been born the day before.

Police believe the officer was pulled from the vehicle and shot to death at Longacre and Joy Rd, where his body was discovered in the street.
His minivan was crashed into a nearby lamppost. Police say he most likely was the victim of an attempted carjacking.

Charles Phipps Jr. cannot believe he will never see his son again. "All he did was help people, so I know it was senseless. It's a terrible thing. It's a disgrace. That violence shouldn't be happening, but it does," he said.

Minutes before Officer Phipps was fatally shot, investigators believe the suspects tried to carjack someone else. Detroit police are now looking for four to six suspects who may have been driving a gray or silver Honda CRV.

Officers who knew Phipps, a 9 year veteran, who worked at the Northwestern district of the Detroit Police Department, are deeply hurt by the shooting. Officer Jason Tonti said, "Great, great person. Good officer. He was hurt in the last couple years, but other then that...great guy."

In 2000, Officer Phipps was shot in the leg during a carjacking. "Nothing deterred him from being a policeman. He still loved that job," said his father Charles Phipps Jr.

Officer Phipps had called in sick for his midnight shift at the Northwestern district of the Detroit Police Department. Relatives said he was looking forward to picking up his wife and newborn baby from the hospital.
"I'm never going to get over this. Never. I'll never get over this good man, this good father and police officer," said Charles Phipps Jr.
Besides his wife Collette and their newborn son, Phipps had two other sons and two stepchildren.

One man was taken into custody Monday [May 1st] as a suspect in the shooting.

**Update: A fourth man was charged in the fatal shooting of an off-duty police officer during a carjacking attempt.

Elgie Grays, 25, of Detroit, was named in a warrant charging him with first-degree murder and felony murder in the April 28 slaying of Charles Phipps III, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said.

Grays also was charged with three counts of assault with intent to commit armed robbery, two counts of armed robbery and one count each of assault with intent to murder, carjacking, use of a firearm in a felony and felon in possession of a firearm.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory life prison term without parole. Grays also was charged as a fourth-time habitual offender, which carries a life prison term.

Brion McConnell, 55; Jason Owens Treadwell, 24; and David Currie, 28, all of Detroit, were charged earlier in Phipps's death.

Phipps, 35, was killed about 24 hours after his wife had given birth to a son. The officer died during a two-hour crime spree in which four other victims also were robbed and carjacked, authorities said.
