Ruth Jost was born to Peter and Maye (Holzer) Jost on Oct. 3, 1921 in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was a graduate and valedictorian of Sioux Falls Washington High School, and attended Sioux Falls College. Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of South Dakota and a Master of Arts degree from the University Of Minnesota, where she also graduated with magna cum laude honors.
Ruth taught business and typing in Worthing, S.D., and Beaver Creek, Minn., before relocating to California to join her future husband, Mark. Ruth married Mark E. Odland on May 21, 1944 in Westwood Hills, Calif. They enjoyed 65 years of married life together.
Ruth was active in many civic and local organizations, including Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Detroit Lakes Library Club, the League Of Women Voters, the Republican Party, North Star Lily Society, and the Women's Group of the United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and loved to research and write on her studies.
Surviving Ruth are her husband, Dr. Mark Odland of Detroit Lakes; son, David (Darlene) Odland of Henderson, Nev.; three daughters, Mary (Rick) Duvall of Plymouth, Minn., Martha (Jeffrey) Anderson and Nancy (Whitney) Peyton, both of Edina, Minn.; seven granddaughters; one great grandson; as well as sister-in-law Arlys Jost of Lebanon, Ohio, and her three children.
Preceding Ruth in death were her loving parents and a brother, Robert, formerly of Muncie, Ind.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at the United Methodist Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Brenda North officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the start of services at the church on Saturday.
