John Edmund Fitzmaurice was born Jan 8, 1839 in Newtown Sandes, County Kerry, Ireland.

In 1858 he emigrated to the United States, studying for for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He was ordained by Bishop James Frederick Wood on Dec 21, 1862.

Father Fitzmaurice served as a curate at St. John's and St. Paul's in Philadelphia. After serving as pastor of St. Agatha's, he became rector of St. Charles Seminary in 1886.

On Dec 14, 1897, Father Fitzmaurice was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Erie by Pope Leo XIII and was consecrated on Feb 24, 1898 by Archbishop Patrick John Ryan.

Bishop Fitzmaurice succeeded the ailing Bishop Tobias Patrick Mullen as Bishop of Erie on Sep 15, 1899. During his 21 years as bishop of Erie, Bishop Fitzmaurice established several parishes and dedicated St. Peter's Cathedral in 1911.

Bishop Fitzmaurice died Jun 18, 1920 at age 81. He was succeeded as Bishop of Erie by the Rev. John Mark Gannon.

Bishop Fitzmaurice's nephew, Edmond John Fitzmaurice (1881 - 1962), was also a priest and later served as Bishop of Wilmington, Delaware (1925 - 1960).
