Gene K Sorensen 1935~2006
Gene K Sorensen, 71, passed away Wed., April 19, 2006, at his home in Orem after a long illness. He was born 5 January 1935 in Delta, Utah, the first of two children born to Kenneth and Nina Abbott Sorensen. He lived and attended schools in Utah, Washington, Oregon and California, graduating from Medford High School, Medford, Oregon. He furthered his education at the College of Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon and at BYU. He entered the Army in 1957, spending time in Fort Gordon, Georgia and in Italy. He was honorably dischaged in 1959. He married Shirley Kirkendall and they were later divorced. He married Judith Ann Parks in Reno, Nevada and their marriage was later solemnized 20 September 1975 in the Manti LDS Temple. Gene enjoyed boating, fishing, camping and hunting with his family. He participated on several bowling leagues for a number of years. Most of his life was spent in the construction business building mausoleums and the last 35 years as a drywall contractor. He had a quick sense of humor and made friends wherever he went. He was grateful for the opportunity to serve in most organizations of the LDS Church. He served as a Sunday School teacher and in the Sunday School presidency; counselor in the Lake Tahoe Elders Quorum; Elders Quorum counselor and president in the Orem 62nd Ward; first and second counselor in the Orem 62nd Ward bishopric; four years as a High Councilman in the BYU 15th Stake. He worked with the youth for many years as Scoutmaster, Blazer Leader and on the advancement committee. He received the Scouting Second Miler Award and had attended Philmont Scout Leadership Training. He and his wife served as stake leadership missionaries in the Orem North Stake. At the time of his death he was a High Priest in the Timpanogos Park 2nd Ward. He is survived by his wife of Orem; children, Kimberly Layne (John) Harper and daughter Whitney Esther, Lehi; Toni Lee (Chad) Black and children Colton Guss, Wyatt Norman, Bailey Ann, Brandee Kae, Brinlee and Brylie Hall, Genola; Scott Sorensen and children Austyn Nikole and Rori Ann, Lehi; Derek Sorensen (Carrie) and children Caden Derek and Parker James, Lehi; Stacy (Mike) Volek and children, Ana, Chloe and Alex, New Mexico; Leslie (Mike) Sales, Illinois; sister, Janet (Leo) Klaassen, Redding, CA. His grandchildren affectionately called him "Papa". Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2006, at the Orem North Stake Center, 1000 North Main, Orem. Family and friends may call Sunday evening April 23, from 6-8 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem and from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the stake center. Interment will be in the Richfield City Cemetery, Richfield, Sevier, Utah.
