Gilbert was the son of Gilbert and Elizabeth Martinelli. He was 83 years old. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served in the Mediterranean and the Pacific. He was present at Operation Ivy, an American nuclear test at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands; and, in 1952, at the detonation of the world's first hydrogen bomb and the largest atomic bomb detonation up to that time. After his discharge, he worked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for over 30 years. Survivors include two daughters, one son, three grandchildren, sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
