Early settler of Mesa, AZ, father, store-keeper, farmer, miner, bishop and mentor to many, was killed in a train wreck near Esmond Junction (not far from Vail and S.W. Tucson), Pima Co., AZ. His body was never recovered. The loss was deeply felt by his two polygamous wives, his many children, the youngest only 4 in 1903. Newspaper accounts of the accident and investigation can be found at the AZ Hist. Soc., Tucson, and in the book by William D. Kalt III, Tucson Was A Railroad Town. One hundred plus years later, a memorial service was held for the approximately 14 people who died in the 1903 train wreck; a plaque was installed near the wreck site at Rita and Houghton streets, in present-day Tucson, AZ.
