Francis A. DiGiano, a West Falmouth resident who left his mark on the community through the many buildings he built around town, died in Falmouth at the age of 92 after a brief illness on June 26. He leaves family in Bourne.
Mr. DiGiano was born in West Bridgewater and moved to West Falmouth in 1967. He was married to Amelia A. (Marconi) DiGiano for 67 years.
He was a building contractor with AC Fohey before he began working on his own. During his construction career Mr. DiGiano was the building superintendent or clerk of the works on commercial and municipal projects in Falmouth and Hyannis.
In Falmouth he built many buildings at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel and the Shoreway Acres Hotel, the MBL summer cottages on Devil’s Lane and Memorial Circle, the Morse Pond School, and the Benthos building. He also helped with various school projects at Otis Air Force Base and built numerous private home projects throughout Falmouth, Woods Hole, and Oyster Harbors.
He left the construction business in 1980, then owned and operated Barlow’s Landing Package Store in Bourne.
After retiring in 1985 Mr. DiGiano and his wife split their time between their homes in Vero Beach, Florida, and West Falmouth.
Mr. DiGiano was an avid saltwater fisherman, cribbage player, cook, and remote control model airplane enthusiast. An ardent Boston sports fan, he was especially devoted to the Red Sox, seldom missing a game on television.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, F. Michael DiGiano and his wife, Christine DiGiano, and Daniel DiGiano and his companion, Heidi Scott, all of West Falmouth, Joseph DiGiano and his wife, Judy DiGiano, of Bourne, and John DiGiano and his wife, Joey DiGiano, of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Kristin Kretschmer and Matthew, Thomas, and Peter DiGiano; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Morgan, and Tucker Kretschmer.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, July 7, from 4 to 7 PM at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Highway.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth.
