Marquette, Mi - Phillip Negley Schaeffer of 1015 High Street, Marquette, MI, died on January 20, 2015 at UP Health Systems - Marquette at the age of 91. Phil was born December 17, 1923, in Columbus, OH.

Phil is survived by his wife, Louise Anderson, whom he married in 2001, sons Michael (Deborah Page) Traverse City, MI; John (Kathryn) Ft. Wayne, IN; Andrew (Paula Dollarhide) Absecon, NJ, daughter-in-law Patricia, Dayton, OH; and daughter Alexandra Thebert, Marquette. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Phil was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise (Rubenkoenig) Schaeffer; grandson, Peter; and son Christopher.

At age 19, Phil was drafted during WWII and spent most of his time in Greenland as an air traffic controller. During the Korean War, he was sent to Germany with the Army Corp of Engineers to assist in the reconstruction.

Anyone who met Phil soon heard about Purdue University from which Phil graduated in Civil Engineering. Shortly after graduation, he began working for Woolpert Consulting Engineers in Dayton, OH, where he eventually became a partner, planning and overseeing the building of infrastructures in southern Ohio. After retiring, Phil and his wife moved to their family property on Brevoort Lake near St. Ignace, Michigan.

Phil was active in the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in St. Ignace. He began as a lay reader and was the priest for 15 years. After moving to Marquette in 2001, Phil joined Messiah Lutheran Church.

He was an excellent sailor, especially enjoying the Great Lakes. He was a woodworker, avid reader, golfer, Purdue Boilermaker and Detroit Lions fan, among multiple interests and activities. At age 91, Phil still loved technology using his iPhone, kindle, and iPad on a regular basis.

Wonderful memories and conversations were shared over many meals and occasional martini. He truly loved having Saturday morning breakfasts with his closest friends. Phil's spirited nature, sparkling blue eyes and kind smile will be dearly missed.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015 at the Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev.'s David Van Kley and Amanda Kossow to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery in the spring. A luncheon will follow the services in the Magnuson Hall at the church.

Our family would like to thank the staff at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, UP Health System – Marquette, UP Home Health and Hospice, Pastor Dave Van Kley and Pastor Amanda Kossow of Messiah Lutheran Church, all of whom were so kind and helpful particularly during Phil's last year.

Contributions in Phil's memory may be sent to Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic St, Marquette, MI 49855 and/or to Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St., Marquette.
