Born to Josiah Leonard and Mary Eleanor Carter Naftzger in the Orange (near Portland), Ionia County, Michigan.

His siblings were: Sarah Alzadie Richmond, Charles V., Catherine May (Kate) Karn and Edward D. (Eddie).

Married Altha Hyacinth Jones November 21, 1909.

Children: Sarah Elizabeth (1910-1982); Catherine Bertha (1911-1986); Edward Paul (1912-1981); Charles Edward (1914-1986); James Leonard (1915-1953); Altha Alzadie (1916-1970); Areta May (1919-1988) and Calvin Aphoes (1925-1970).

GRANDCHILDREN:

SARAH: Robert Ernest (1938-2004) and Elaine Leona (1941)

CATHERINE: Patricia Catherine (1940) and Sally Altha (1948).

EDWARD: Sandra Jean (1940); Ernest Calvin (1943); Wilma Diane (1945); Helen Eileen (1948); Charles Edward (1953).

JAMES: Pamela Jo (1948); Virginia Lee (1949) and James Leonard Jr (1953).

ARETA KOCHER: Louise Doreen (1945-2008); Marie Eileen (1954) and Diane Lynn (1955)

Ernest's sister, Catherine Karn ("Aunt Kate")lived in Wilder throughout his life there. She helped provide the mother role after Ernest lost his mother when he was 5 years old. He was glad to have her closeby throughout his life.

His sister Alzadie and brother Charles V. made their homes in Salem, Oregon. His father, Josiah was also close to Salem until his death in 1907. His closest brother, who was 16 months younger than Ernest, Eddie, died of an accidental gunshot wound when the child was 10 years old. Ernest's second son carried his buddy's name.

Ernest raised and processed large amount of apples in Wilder area.

Prior to that, he had worked in a garage in Vale, farmed in Gervais and worked in a lumber mill in Gardiner, Oregon.

He was Spanish American War Veteran and Idaho chair of Spanish America War Veterans. He outlived nearly all of them. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He was an active member and great supporter of the Golden Gate Baptist Church. He and his wife were honored with seats in the first pew of the church. His support of his religion was like that of his father and grandfather. He was on school board in Wilder for many years. He also was the Republican precinct committeeman for several years.
