Jacob Davidson Helman was the fifth of seven known children of George Helman (1821-1905) and Elizabeth Rothrock (1828-1903), who married 30 Mar 1848 at Stark County, Ohio.

Jacob first married to Emma Alice (went by Alice) Buchtel (1863-1895) on 04 Dec 1880 at Stark County, Ohio. Jacob and Alice were the parents of five known children (there may be additional children who died young), namely:

1. Emery Allen Helman (1881-1954)
2. Daisie Marie Helman Langdon (1883-1934)
3. Nancy Elizabeth Helman Shaver (1886-1962)
4. George Samuel Helman (1888-1959)
5. Henry Ray Helman (1892-1982)

In 1900 the widower Jacob (listed as "Jack") and all five children were living at New Haven, Gratiot County, Michigan.

Jacob remarried to the divorced Barbara Serena (went by Rena) Marks Wiles (1880-1969) on 02 Nov 1902 at Muir, Ionia County, Michigan. Rena had two children by her first husband, Joseph Alexander Barnes (1873-1952), whom she married on 22 Apr 1897 at New Haven Center, Gratiot County., Michigan and divorced on 20 Jan 1900. When Rena married in 1897 she said her parents were Abraham Wiles and Angeline Day. When she married in 1902 she said her father was Samuel Marks. It is believed that Rena was born to Peter/Petri L. Marks (1853-1882) and Angelina Day/Days (1856-1935). After Peter died, Angelina remarried to Abraham Wiles (1845-1901), then Samuel (Sovanah?) Marks (related to Peter?), and finally to Arthur W. Lewis. Her two children with Joseph Barnes were:

6. Floyd Abraham Barnes Helman (1897-1972)
7. Mina Barnes Helman Eldred (1899-1975)

After marrying Jacob, Rena had one known additional child, namely:

8. Ada May Helman (1905-1930)

In 1910 Jacob, Rena, Ada, and step-children Floyd and Mina Barnes were living at Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan. In 1920 Jacob, Barbara and children: Henry and Ada were living at Pine River, Gratiot County, Michigan. In 1930 Jacob, B. Serena and married step-daughter Mina Barnes Eldred and her family were living at Ithaca, Gratiot County, Michigan. In 1940 the widow Rena was living at Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan. The step-son Floyd seems to have used the Helman name all of his adult life. Was he (and Mina?) adopted by Jacob?

Sometime after 1940 Rena remarried to a Mr. Kimball.
