Millinocket- Martha Susan (Boynton) Elliott (Gram), 96, passed away peacefully 13 Jan 2015, at Katahdin Health Care, Millinocket, Maine, after a full and wonderful life.
Martha was born April 8, 1918 in East Millinocket, Maine. She was the youngest of seven children, five girls and two boys, born and raised to Charles Boynton and Cora (Leavitt) Boynton. Martha spent her younger years attending school and helping out at her mother's restaurant, Cora's Lunch, in East Millinocket. When she grew older, she traveled around New England, living with her older sister's and their families, helping out around the house and with their young children. Martha especially enjoyed her time living in New York City. She recalled fondly working side by side her sister Lula at the Grumman Aircraft Factory, assembling cockpit instrument dashboards on the overnight shift, for the American WWII war effort. She loved attending all the shows and entertainment that big city had to offer.
Martha returned to East Millinocket, and soon after, she met Donald R. Elliott, who had recently returned home from the Pacific Theater of WWII. They were married in Mattawamkeag on June 28, 1947, and lived happily in Millinocket all their lives. Martha was a wonderful homemaker and a truly outstanding cook. With family favorites of biscuits and baked beans, spaghetti sauce, turkey with all the trimmings, and wonderful pies and sweets that we could not get enough of. She loved to knit, with sweaters, socks, mittens and hats in service around town to this day. Gram read almost every book she could get her hands on, and sometimes, more than once. But her all time favorite activity, other than doting on her loving grandson, was spending time at the family camp on Ambejejus Lake. Sitting on the porch with her feet up, watching the birds flicker around in the trees, the boats go by on the lake, and just enjoying the changing sky and the view of her beloved Katahdin. Family get-togethers at camp, especially on the 4th of July, were always great fun. For over 20 years, their retired winters were spent in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, with many of their family and friends living in the same neighborhood, were wonderful times.
Martha was a true original and a proud woman. Her generation of people is so resilient and strong. We learned so much from my loving Gram. She will be greatly missed by many family members and friends. Her memories, teachings, and stories we will cherish forever.
