A resident of Amite, he died on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at his home. He was born February 3, 1919 in Liverpool, LA and was 95 years of age.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran during World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he sold real estate in San Francisco until 1953, when his brothers convinced him to return to Kentwood to help run Allen Brothers’ Supermarket. In 1963, he moved to Amite and opened Glen Allen’s IGA (later Sunflower) Supermarket. From 1973 until 1977, he ran a cattle farm and later a Christmas tree farm west of Kentwood. From 1977 until his retirement in 1981, he owned The Pantry Supermarket in Roseland. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Amite and a 52-year member of the Amite Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Directors of the Rosenblum Mental Health Center in Hammond for 50 years.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Giuliana Allen, Baltimore, MD; daughter, Rosalind Allen, Walker; grandchildren, Bianca Allen of New York, NY and Edward Allen of Aurora, IL and great-granddaughter, Scarlette Rose Allen of Aurora, IL. Preceded in death by wife, Mary C. Allen; parents, Curtis and Clara Allen; 2 brothers, J. Y. Allen and Pierce Allen; 3 sisters, Berniece Morgan, Viola Bryan and Vivien Hutchinson.

Visitation at First United Methodist Church, Amite, from 10 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015. Services conducted by Rev. Ken Bowman. Interment Woodland Cemetery, Kentwood. Pallbearers will be members of the Amite Rotary Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mary C. Allen Scholarship at the Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing.
