Presumed Drowned in Morro Bay Channel

At approximately 8:15 PM on March 7th 1939, John Cardoza and two other men were returning from a fishing trip in a small wooden boat in the swift channel waters near Morro Rock. It was dark and the water was condintions were rough. According to reports, a faulty oar-lock caused a blade to be lost, and in trying to retrieve it the small boat capsized. The accident is believed to have occured between Stockings Wharf and Morro Bay, nearly opposite White's Point.

The other two men on board the boat were able to swim to shore and told authorities that John had drowned, having been clad in his boots and the heavy clothing he was wearing. The boat washed ashore in Baywood Park shortly after the incident.

Shortly after the accident, Undersheriff Paul Merrick arrived with the Pierce brothers (divers), and cruised the bay for the body. The next morning Karl Pierce dived in the search but without success. Morro Bay Police Officers took charge; posting gaurds by Morro Rock and organizing a search effort, but no body was found. The effort was temporarily suspended when divers reported that the current was so fast there was no way of telling where the body might have washed. Sherrif Murray C. Hathaway and District Attorney A, H. Brazil interrogated friends and known acquaintances, including the other two men on board.
