Stationed at No.31 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) in De Winton, Alberta, Canada, he perished in the crash of 31 EFTS's Fairchild Cornell I (#FJ689) aircraft. His instructor Sergeant-Pilot Robert William Torrie also lost his life.

Awarded 2 September 1943. For the preparation and execution a plan to escape from occupied Netherlands to England, which he reached after many difficulties.
