Evan ‘Van’ joined the Union Army in 1862 and rose to the rank of a captain. He married Alice Udell in 1864 in Iowa, and they moved to Cloud County, Kansas. They homesteaded 160 acres a mile and a half west of where Concordia was eventually settled.
‘Van’ was a Cloud County Commissioner, County Clerk, County Treassurer, and in 1888 a Senator representing Republic and Cloud counties in the Kansas Legislature.
He took his life in 1890.
