Myers was Cashier and Trust Officer of the the Fountain Trust Company from 1952 to 1966, and also operated a farm in Fountain County. He was elected to the US House in 1966 and reelected fourteen times, serving from January, 1967 to January, 1997. He rose to become the ranking Republican on the Appropriations Committee, but was not selected for the chairmanship when Republicans took control of the House in 1995. The technology building at Indiana State University is named for him, as are the John T. Myers Locks and Dam at in Posey County, Indiana and Union County Kentucky.
