Mary Elizabeth Haskins, 58, of Brenham passed from this life Monday, July 1, 2002 in Trinity Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born April 6, 1944 in San Angelo, Texas to Eugene Edgar and Ruth Elizabeth (Crouch) Armistead. She shared her upbringing with nine siblings. After earning an undergraduate degree from Missouri State University, she continued her education and received a masters degree in education from Sam Houston State University. She worked for many years dedicated to improving the lives of those with special needs. She was employed with the Brenham State School for 16 years. Sept. 7, 1984 she married Jimmy R. Haskins in Brenham. Mary is survived by her husband, Jimmy R. Haskins of Brenham; mother, Ruth Elizabeth (Crouch) Armistead of Austin; daughter, Madeline Lee Rivera and son-in-law, Salvador Rivera of Hutto; sisters, Jean Atkinson of Palestine, Denise Armistead of Austin and Linda Niemi of Houston; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Shirley Armistead of Riverside, Calif., David and Suzanne Armistead of Austin and Steven Armistead of Vancouver, Wash.; mother-in-law, Mrs. W.A. Haskins of Tehuacana; step-daughter, Christi Kobelan and husband Thomas of Austin; along with five step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her father, Eugene Edgar Armistead; sisters, Ruth Moment Armistead and Pamela Gem Hanrahan. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Charles Matejowsky will officiate. The reception with family will follow the service at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society or American Lung Association. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham.
