Mr. Krupa first joined the United States Navy in April of 1921 and served faithfully until October of 1933. On October 26, 1933 he was elevated to the Officer corps. and eventually retired at a Lt. Commander in April of 1950. He saw sea duty on the USS Wyoming, the USS Oklahoma (capsized and sunk at Pearl Harbor), the USS West Virginia (sunk at Pearl Harbor) and the USS Raineir (AE-5 Executive Officer). While aboard the USS West Virginia, as a Gunner's Mate, he was cited by the Battle Force Commander for efficiency.
His citation reads "The Commander Battleships, Battle Force, notes that 16 inch 45 caliber Turret No.4 of the USS West Virginia has been awarded the Navy "E" for excellence on all of the last four annual Short Range Battle Practices. This continued evidence of efficiency reflects the highest credit on the officers and men who have formed the crews of the turret, and particularly on those who have been members of the turret crew for several years.
The Commanding Officer, West Virginia states that you have served as a member of the crew of Turret No.4 for three years. The Commader Battleships, Battle Force, congratulates you on the success of your turret and commends you for the loyalty, skill, and attention to duty which have made that success possible."
Lt. Commander Krupa saw shore duty at Balboa, Canal Zone; Mare Island Naval Shipyard; Bremerton, Washington and NTS Great Lakes, ILL.
He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with two reelistment bars, World War II Victory medal, American Defense Service medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, American Theater Campaign medal, Philippine Liberation medal, Navy Occupation medal, Navy Expert Rifleman medal, and Navy Expert Pistol medal.
He also won many civilian/military shooting medals, including the NorthWest International pistol & revolver association 1931 Service Team medal; the Battle Force Rifle Match medal-1935 first place; the 1940 Richmond, Virginia Pistol & Revolver League Championship medal, the 1940 National Military Pistol Match "High on the Team" Championship; the California Rifle and Pistol Assn 1936 "Colton Trophy", the San Diego Police Revolver Club .45 Cal Championship medal, the Honolulu Police Rifle & Pistol Club 1938 Championship medal, and the 1949 and 1950 San Francisco Police Dept. Pistol Matches First Place medals, to name just a few of the many shooting medals he won.
