Mrs. J. H. Courtright (Jeanette M. "Nettie" Courtright), long-time resident of Gosper county, who had been ill since early summer, passed away at her home west of Elwood Friday morning about 7:45 o'clock, from a heart attack. While visiting her daughter, Mrs. George Caswell, at Gothenburg early in June, she became quite ill and was not able to return to her home until late in July. She rallied from this sickness but suddenly became ill again from a heart attack just previous to the time death called her.
Born July 7, 1870, at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, she was 69 years of age at the time of her death. Her parents moved to Missouri when she was a small child and later to Furnas county where she became a member of the Baptist church. They lived in Furnas county until they came to Gosper county in 1882 and settled near the town of Homerville. At the age of 15 years she was married to James H. Courtright by Judge E. L. Burk, Sept. 21, 1885, in the courthouse then established in Homerville. There they homesteaded land adjoining the town site of Homerville and made that vicinity their home for a number of years. When the county seat was moved to Elwood Mr. and Mrs. Courtright sold their homestead where they had lived for years and moved to this community.
Seven children were born to this union, one son passing away in infancy. Surviving are her husband and six children, Norris of Morrill and Hobert of Elwood, Mrs. John (Mary Agnes) Speck, Moorefield; Mrs. George (Melissa) Caswell, Gothenburg; Mrs Nettie Benson and Mrs. Ernest Whitman, both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a niece, Mrs. Clara Suthmer of Buffalo, Wyo., a nephew, Hobart Ward of Billings, Mont., and 24 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church in Elwood Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, being in charge of Rev. McCormick. He used as his text II Peter 1:14, "Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Christ hath showed."
Appropriate music was sung by a quartette composed of Mrs. E. G. Grannis, Mrs. Roy Shepherd, J. M. Reynolds and H. G. Salisbury, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. E. H. Ledyard.
Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased and were Horace Caswell, Randolph and Albert Benson, Robert Whitman, Cecil Hallow and Francis Speck.
Interment was in the Elwood cemetery.
