Sister Lucy Abbey, IHM

Sister Lucy Abbey, IHM, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the IHM Health Care Center.

Sister Lucy was born on July 15, 1946, in New London, N.H., to Robert and Elizabeth (Meader) Abbey. She grew up in New London and Ardmore, Pa., where she graduated from Archbishop Prendergast High School, Drexel Hill. In 1963, she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Immaculata, Pa. In 1988, she transferred to the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, of Monroe and recently celebrated her 50th Jubilee as a woman religious.

Sister Lucy earned a bachelor’s degree from Immaculata College, Immaculata, Pa. She earned a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania and a master of arts in social justice from Marygrove College, Detroit, in 2011. Prior to entering the Monroe IHMs, Sister Lucy taught elementary education at Incarnation School, Philadelphia; St. Ann, Phoenixville; and St. Peter, Reading, Pa. At the high school level, she taught religion and Spanish studies at St. Hubert, Pa; Archbishop Wood, Warminster; Cardinal O’Hara and Notre Dame, Springfield, Pa. Upon moving to Detroit and entering the SSIHM of Monroe, Mich., Sister Lucy expanded her education ministry. She spent several years as an advocate for social justice with Groundwork for a Just World and as a pastoral associate at St. Suzanne Church, Detroit, for more than 15 years. After earning her degree in social justice, Sister Lucy ministered to adult students, immigrants and veterans in family literacy and English language through Southwest Solutions, Detroit. She continued her ministry to the people of Detroit as a community organizer at St. Christopher Parish, Detroit, until her health declined.

Sister Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth (Meader) Abbey. She is survived by many cousins.

Visitation will be held at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Avenue, Monroe on Friday, Jan.30 from 2 until 6:30 p.m. with a Remembering at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow. Private burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
