John Speer Hollis was born in Ashlington, Pa., September 9, 1835, and died at his home 3 miles southwest of Delphos January 13, 1922 at the good ripe age of 86 years 4 months and 4 days. His young life and early manhood were spent in Ohio and Indiana. He was married to Berniece Lowery November 21, 1857 at Bloomington, Illinois.
They came to Kansas in the year 1870 and settled on a homestead 3 miles southwest of Delphos where they have lived continuously, reared their family, and made a comfortable home, and where they were when the end of the journey came to him. He suffered a stroke of paralysis December 23 and was a very patient sufferer, but at all times seeming to possess consciousness and was able to recognize his loved ones. He asked them to pray with him and, as they gathered around his bed and sang "There is a Land That is Fairer Than Day", he pointed upward indicating his faith and hope. When asked, "John, do you believe Jesus is your Saviour, he died for you." Due to belief, he answered clearly, "I do." Several hymns were sung and prayers offered. Seven children and his beloved wife were with him at the last.
He leaves, besides these, two sisters and one brother, an entire community of neighbors and friends to mourn for a kind husband, a loving father and a loyal neighbor. He came to this valley when it took courage and endurance to commence the building of a home, but undaunted, he and his faithful wife labored under the trying conditions of pioneer days. They were industrious and frugal and the Lord blessed their efforts and at the good age, like a ripe sheaf, he is gathered to his Father, leaving behind sons, daughters and grandchildren to look upon the fruits of the labors of pioneers – beautiful homes, school houses and churches.
