BLOOMINGTON -- Jill Kristen Behrman, age 19, of Bloomington was taken from us on May 31, 2000. She was born September 17, 1980, at Bloomington Hospital, the daughter of Eric and Marilyn (Naden) Behrman.

Jill had completed her freshman year at Indiana University. She lived in Teter Quadrangle and worked at the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC), McDonald's at Reed Hall, IU Athletic Outfitters, and Hoosiers for Higher Education during her year at IU.

Jill graduated with honors from Bloomington High School South in June 1999, earning an Honors Diploma. While in high school, Jill received the following awards: Bertha Rogers Hinkle Memorial Scholarship, 1999; Ross & Jean Marrs Scholarship, First United Methodist Church, 1999; President's Academic Fitness Award, 1999; All-Conference Indiana Scholar Athlete Award, 1999; Leadership Opportunities Through Service (LOTS) Certificate, 1999; National Honor Society, 1998-1999; Varsity letters (volleyball) Bloomington High School South, 1996, 1997 and 1998; All-Conference Indiana Award (volleyball) 1997; Honorary Captain Award (volleyball), Bloomington High School South, 1997.

Jill was a member of First United Methodist Church, FUMC Youth Fellowship, deCycles Indiana, the Monroe County YMCA and the BHSS Volleyball team. In 1998-99, Jill served as a LOTS Senior at Bradford Woods (with Unionville and Marlin Elementary Schools) and she participated in an exchange program with students from Germany and BHSS. She had also participated in Track & Field and Swimming at BHSS. From 1995 through 1999, Jill was a member of various volleyball clubs, including Renegades, Circle City, South Central Indiana Volleyball Association (SCIVA), and Hoosier Heartland. Jill was formerly a member of the Indiana Track Club, Girl's Inc., where she played softball and basketball, Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington, where she played soccer, Girl Scouts and Brownies of Tulip Trace Council, and Monroe County 4-H.

While in high school, Jill worked at Mr. D's, Luca Pizza and Dairy Queen in Bloomington. She had planned to work on staff at Camp Brosius, the IU Alumni Association's family camp in Wisconsin, during the summer of 2000. Jill had served as a volunteer at Bloomington Hospital as a candy striper, Community Kitchen and Hoosier Hills Food Bank. She also participated in several FUMC mission trips, Crop Walk, and twice served as a page at the Indiana State Legislature.

Jill also attended Childs Elementary School and Batchelor Middle School, where she participated in Volleyball, Swimming and Track & Field.

Jill's hobbies included cycling (road bike), volleyball, traveling, hiking and camping (particularly in the Rocky Mountains), skiing (snow and water), swimming, exercising and weight lifting, reading, listening to music, spending time with friends, and having fun.

Jill's ambition was "to meet many new people, establish strong friendships and relationships, become involved on campus, in the community and to grow as a person." She planned "to find success in the classroom throughout my college career and to be the best I can be in my chosen field of study."

Survivors include her parents, Eric L. and Marilyn Jane (Naden) Behrman of Bloomington; brother, Brian D. Behrman of Indianapolis; grandparents, Lester K. and Nancy Behrman of Westport, IN; aunts, Resa (Don) Rudolph of Seymour, IN, Kyra Behrman of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan Naden (Khris Dickover) of Tipton, IN; Joan (Colin) Clay of Fort Collins, CO; uncle, James C. (Gale) Naden of Atlanta, IN; cousins, Paul (Tamara) Stowers of Tipton, IN, Travis Stowers of Carmel, IN, Amanda Naden of Elwood, IN, Spc. Wm. Robert Naden (U.S. Army) stationed in Iraq, Andrea Rudolph of Seymour, IN, and Khristofer Dickover of Tipton, IN. Also surviving is her cousin, childhood friend and college roommate, Rebecca L. Shoemake of Allison Park, PA.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert B. and Sara (Brown) Naden of Atlanta, IN.

A service of celebration of Jill's life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Bloomington, Indiana, with Rev. Howard Boles officiating. Rev. Preston C. Brown of Rapid City, SD, Jill's great-uncle, will also participate in the service.

The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to any of the following in honor and memory of Jill:

First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 936, Bloomington, IN 47402 (Jill Behrman Scholarship or the Columbarium Fund). The Jill Behrman Scholarship provides scholarship assistance to a college student. The Columbarium Fund provides for the completion of FUMC's courtyard and garden, which will include a columbarium and labyrinth prayer walk.

Jill Behrman Emerging Leader Scholarship, Indiana University Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN 47402. This scholarship is awarded to students active in the Division of Recreational Sports who exhibit outstanding leadership skills in campus and community events and activities.

Jill's House Inc., IU Cyclotron Facility, 2401 N. Milo B. Sampson Lane, Bloomington, IN 47408. Jill's House will provide a temporary, home-like residence for patients undergoing outpatient therapy for various forms of cancer at Indiana University's Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI).
