He rejoined his unit from the hospital being charged with 2 days absent without leave. Private Cawood then contracted pneumonia. When he rejoined his unit, he sustained a gunshot wound to the head, September 17, 1918. In the letter his father received telling him of the gunshot wound to the head the "actual condition not stated." There is no further medical information in his record. He returned to Australia on 23 March 1919 and discharged on 7 May 1919 at which time it appears he returned to Apollo Bay.
