William Henry was baptised at St Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton, Somerset, England on the
9th January 1806 by his parents James Alexander, a cutler, and his wife Mary (nee Dell). He was their seventh child and fourth son.

William Henry's first marriage was on the 17th January 1829 in Bishops Lydeard, Somerset, England.
It was announced in the Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser on the 21st January 1829 "MARRIED On Saturday last, at Bishop's Lydeard, Mr H. Alexander, of this town, to Miss F. Hucklebridge, of the Bell Inn, of the former place".
His wife was Frances Maria Huckleburge (1806–1832).
They baptised a son William Henry on the 11th October 1830 at Bishops Lydeard and Williams occupation was given as a malster. However the child died and there was in inquest on the 31st January 1831 by a Mr Caines whose verdict was "Accidentally suffocated". At this time William Henry was described as an Inn keeper at The Bell Inn in Bishops Lydeard. The son William Henry was buried on the 13th January 1831 at Bishops Lydeard. On the 21st Feb 1832 The Bell Inn at Bishops Lydeard was "For Sale - leaving business owing to ill health". William's wife Frances died and was buried on the 5th October 1832 at St Mary's Church, Bishops Lydeard, Somerset, England.

William Henry appears to go into business in London with his brother John who writes his will and then dies in 1833 mentioning a "deed of partnership with brother William Henry". In 1835 William Henry is a general factor and widower in St Leonards, Shoreditch.

On the 18th March 1835 at St Andrew's Church in Northover, Somerset, William Henry Alexander married Maria Ann Hardy (1808–1884). Her father W E Hardy was a witness. William Erasmus was the highly respected governor of Ilchester Castle.

Maria Ann gave birth to their first and only son on the 8th January 1837 at Ilchester Castle and he was baptised at St Andrew's on the 8th February 1837.
At some time between then and 1842 William Henry, Maria and son Henry emigrated, initially to the United States. A daughter Frances Maria was born in Uticah, New York that year and they then moved to Quebec in Canada before June 1849 when a daughter Louisa was born in Kingston.

William Henry was a bookseller and stationer until his death in 1867 and was buried on the 11th February.
