Johannes Hack (also spelled Haack, Haak, Haag, Hawk, Hauck & Houck) was the first furnace master in Columbia County, PA. He was born in Rockland Township, Berks County, PA on Sept 8, 1769. He was the son of Jacob & Margaretha (Dubs) Haak and the grandson of Andreas Haak & Anna Cunigunda (nee unknown).

Johannes' first wife was Maria Barbara Dreibelbis, born May 23, 1773, died Feb 7, 1807. She was the daughter of Abraham Dreibelbis & Anna Margaret Rothermel. Barbara is buried at Christ Church (De Long's) Cemetery in Bowers, Berks Co with Johannes parents and his younger brother Jacob Haak Jr. The burial location of Johannes' grandparents is currently unknown but is presumed to be at Bowers.

This first marriage produced 6 children:
Barbara Haak, m. Benjamin Hottenstein
Johannes Haak, m. Elisabeth Angstadt
Susanna Haak, m. Benjamin Tyson
George Haak
Esther Haak, m. Peter Miller
Jacob Haak

After Barbara's death in 1807, Johannes married Salome "Sarah" Rothermel sometime between 1807 - 1809.

This marriage produced 9 more children:
Jonathan Hauck, m. Lucinda Troy
Benjamin Hauck, m. Sarah Michael
Peter Hauck, m. Lucy Ann Michael
Anna Hauck, m. (1)Jessie Rhoades, (2)Jonathan Knittle
Sarah Hauck, m. Peter Trump
Margaret Hauck, m. Isaac Betz
Andreas Hauck, m. Hannah Fox
Henrich Hauck, m. Rachel Brouse
William Hauck, m. Elisabeth Yetter

11/24/2014 - New information on Salome reveals she was born May 10, 1792. Died on July 27, 1875, age 83 yrs, 2 mos, 17 days. She married two more times after John's death in 1825 - First to Caspar Rhoades (abt 1833) and finally to George Hartzell. Calculating from her date of death, Salome would have been 15 - 16 years old when she married John Hauck. Her last son was Joseph Caspar Rhoades, born 1836, died 1908. On his death certificate it lists Salome's maiden name as "Rothermell". This has NOT yet been confirmed by a birth record or other documentation.

In 1815 Johannes moved his family to Catawissa, Columbia County to start his furnace business. To this enterprise he added a Grist Mill, Saw Mill and a Forge where he produced cast iron stoves, stamped "John Hauck, Catawissa Furnace".

History does not tell us how John died but on Sept 22, 1825 he departed this world, leaving behind a pregnant widow and several small children. John was 56 years old and 14 days. Most of John's property was sold to pay his creditors as recorded at the Columbia County Courthouse. For many years John's final resting spot remained a mystery until recently when I was able to get a good photograph of his stone and was then able to translate the writing. How surprise I was to trace the names of his parents, grandparents and his siblings. As Johannes 4th great grand-daughter I am happy to share this information with other Hauck researchers.
