As told to me by Grandma, Evelyn May Snider Herres, 1989-1990:

Wenzel Herres was born September 12, 1865 in Bremburg Co., Odenburg. He worked as a coal miner in Germany. In 1881, he left Germany for America and traveled alone. He settled in Dayton, Ohio. His step-father and family (the Tribers) joined him a year later. In 1891, he married Rufina Wirth in Dayton, Ohio. A story that has been mentioned on several occasions is that Wenzel was dining in a restaurant downtown and asked who had cooked the meal because he was going to marry the lady who cooked the meal. Wenzel was introduced to Rufina and they were soon married. Wenzel ran a saloon on E. 5th St. Wenzel died November 30, 1944.

Rufina Wirth was born July 16, 1873 in Langenleiten, Bavaria-Germany. She sailed to America in 1883 with her father Johann Wirth and family and settled in Landic, Van Wert Co., Ohio. She later went to Dayton and found work as a cook in a hotel. She married Wenzel Herres and they had six children: Carl, Herbert, Albert, Gertrude, Joseph and Wenzel, Jr. Rufina died March 12, 1957.
