George H. Austin, 61, who served as overseer of the poor in Windsor since 1932, died Friday morning at the Windsor Hospital where he had been taken the previous night. At the time Mr. Austin was elected to office the village manager system was abolished and the town manager system had been done away with previously. But besides his duties as overseer of the poor during the years of Windsor's depression, he had charge of the town highways, transacted all the duties of manager and was known as the town manager.

He had suffered from arthritis for several years particularly in the left leg, which he hurt playing football at Windsor High School back in the 90's. He was a nabive of Windsor, the son of Edgar H. and Laura (Hoisington) Austin. He graduated from Windsor High school in 1895 and worked for several years at the Windsor Savings Bank.He afterwards was private secretary to the late Augustus Saint-Gaudens in Cornish and then worked at Vermont State Prison. He also was employed at the Central Vermont railroad freight office and the National Acme Co.

He was married in New York City in 1907, to Winifred Conway, who died in 1925. He leaves three children, Laura of Sptingfield, VT, Harry of Windsor, and Walter who is president of the senior class at Windsor High School.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Rachel Harlow Methodist church with Rev. M. A. Turner officiated.
