He was born in Port William, Liberty Twp, Clinton County, Ohio; the son of Andrew Dayton and Alzina Catherine (Stephens) Sanderson. He married Anna Charlotte Humphreys on October 28, 1902. To this union, six children were born: Eva, Leloa, Estella, Violet, Zeula C., and Marguerite Sanderson.

Clay Sanderson, 63, died Monday at his home one and one-half miles northeast of West Manchester. Sanderson formerly operated restaurants in Richmond and West Manchester.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Anna Sanderson; six daughters, Mrs. Eva Conkle, Richmond, Ind., Mrs. Leola Ellington, New Castle, Ind., Mrs. Margaret Somers, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Stella Jones, Mrs. Violet Davison and Mrs. Zeula Kyle, all of Eldorado, and one brother, Everett Sanderson, Middletown.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the West Manchester Congregational Christian church in charge of Rev. M.V. Smith. Burial was made in Monroe Cemetery.
