Peggy Guptill, 60, enjoyed many careers
COLUMBIA — Peggy Guptill died Wednesday, June 5, 2013. She was 60.
She was born June 25, 1952, in Kirksville to Wilford Edgar and Frances Ward Farmer.
She married Paul B. Guptill of Columbia in 2005.
Throughout her childhood, Mrs. Guptill was privileged to travel and move to different locations with her family. She was valedictorian of her high school class in Albany. Mrs. Guptill attended MU, graduating in 1974 from what is now the Sinclair School of Nursing.
Mrs. Guptill went on to work with the Army 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, where she lived for three years. She then returned to Columbia and worked as an intensive care unit nurse at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran's Hospital and an obstetrics and ICU nurse at the Boone Hospital Center.
Mrs. Guptill then moved to Liberty and continued her academic studies. She received a mechanical engineering degree from MU and an MBA from the University of Kansas. As an engineering student, she was inducted into Tau Beta Sigma and Tau Beta Pi honor fraternities and began her career-long membership in the Professional Society of Women Engineers, serving several years as an officer. Mrs. Guptill utilized both her nursing an engineering backgrounds when she began working for Puritan Bennett in Kansas City.
Following her divorce from her first husband, David, in 1997, Mrs. Guptill moved back to Columbia and worked as a product and manufacturing engineer for 3M. She retired after 10 years.
After retiring, Mrs. Guptill enjoyed building new friendships and learning new sewing skills with the Esther Circle of United Methodist Women. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and an officer of United Methodist Women. She enjoyed sharing her woodworking, sewing and design skills with her church family by creating banners and other useful items the church needed.
Mrs. Guptill 's other passions included reading and relationships. She participated in a monthly book club and liked that it provided opportunities for both reading and friendships.
In 2005, she married her husband, Paul, and regarded him as the kindest man she had ever met.
Mrs. Guptill is survived by her sisters, Becky Ann Farmer, of Gaylord, Mich., Judy Kay Farmer, of Reno, Nev.; niece Jenny Jones, and her daughters, of Gaylord, Mich.; cousin Janice Peterson, and her family, of Davenport, Iowa; stepsons James Guptill, and wife, Kristie, and sons, of Charlotte, N.C., and John Guptill, and his wife, Amy, and their sons, of St. Louis; first mother-in-law Helen Long of Hannibal; first in-laws Dale and Ruth Hammontree, of Elsberry, and their children, Shawna and Jason, and grandson of Winfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Ave., Suite 203, Evanston, Ill., 60202, or the Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 S. Ninth St., Columbia, Mo. 65201.
