David Henry Harris was born in Morriston, South Wales, July 25th 1832 and died in Spokane, Washington, October 20, 1915, aged 83 years, 2 months and 20 days. He came to this country in the spring of 1855, locating at Danville, Pennsylvania, where he was united in marriage to Martha Morris in the year of 1857, and soon afterward moved to Coal Valley, Illinois. To this union were born five children, all of whom died in infancy except James David Harris who now resides in Delmont, South Dakota. Later the family moved from Coal Valley to Dog Town, Illinois, where Mrs. Harris died.

Mr. Harris was again married to Martha Jones in March 1868, to this union were born twelve children, four of whom died in infancy, eight being left to mourn their loss. Their names and place of residence are as follows: Daniel Harris of Dixon, South Dakota; Mary Harris Hoge, Washtucna, Washington; Louis Harris, Platt, South Dakota; Henry Harris of Sioux City Iowa; Matthew Harris of Portland, Oregon; William Harris of Spokane, Washington; Sadie Harris Gaskill of Colome, South Dakota; and Maude Harris of Washtucna, Washington. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Sarah Williams who resides in Viola, Illinois.

In 1875 Mr. Harris left the coal mine and located on a farm near Reynolds, Illinois where he lived till the fall of 1882, when he moved with his family to Correctionville, Iowa and from thence to Platte, South Dakota, in the spring of 1893, where he lived till the fall of 1910. He then moved to Oregon where he lived till February 1st, 1911, when his wife died. Since then, until his death his home has been with his daughter Mary Harris Hoge in Washington.

Brother Harris became a member of the Baptist church in his boyhood, and has been a faithful and consistent Christian man all his life. He was a charter member of the Blue Masonic Lodge, organized in Viola, Illinois, October 6th, 1868.

He patiently bore all his sufferings with a Christian like spirit. He nurse often spoke of his cheerfulness and thankfulness for blessings bestowed on him, and of how dear and patient he was to care for in his sickness. He was confined to his bed about five weeks.

The funeral was conducted from the home of Mr. Brown D. Baxter, by Rev. C. C, Harper of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Eckley of the M. E. church, and the remains laid to rest in the Viola Cemetery.
