Myrtle E. Melcher SLATON-A rosary for Myrtle Melcher, 91, of Slaton will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, in Englunds lead by Mark Meurer. Celebration of life mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, in Slaton's St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Nicolas Rendon officiating. Burial will follow in Lubbock's Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
Myrtle was born on the family farm near Slaton on June 7, 1923. She passed from this life surrounded by her family on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015.
Myrtle attended and graduated from Southland ISD. She worked for Baldridge Bread Co. until 1942. Myrtle married Jerry Ferdinand Melcher on Aug. 28, 1941. They lived in Lubbock County until 1951 moving to Brownfield until 1953, and returned to the Southland community, and started their farming career. She and Jerry retired in 1986 and moved to Slaton due to health considerations.
She's been a resident since. She was a lifelong member of Slaton's St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving on many parish organizations, the Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, Catholic Quilters and Sunday school teacher.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, and her daughter, Karen Creager in 2000, as well as two grandsons.
Her survivors include her son, Fred, of Slaton; a son-in-law, Jeff Creager and his wife, Deanna; along with five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Denice Ayers and Katie Spargo for their compassionate care of Myrtle for the last eight years.
