James I. Gardner was born to the marriage of James A. and Martha Smith Gardner. James I. Gardner owned and operated J.I. Gardner General Merchandise in Prescott, AZ between 1883 and 1913. J. I. Gardner first came to Prescott in 1879, and opened his first mercantile store four years later. He married Rebecca E. Gardner on June 30, 1890. Also in 1890, he commissioned the construction of a store at 201 N. Cortez. (This site is now on the historic register, and is marked with interpretive signage). Gardner's claimed that, "all goods guaranteed to be first class," and selections ranged from produce and dry goods to household goods, ranching and farming supplies, and clothing. Gardner's offered a mail order service, and would ship goods via train to other parts of the country. J.I. Gardner was the father of a daughter, and son prominent Prescott,Az poet Gail Gardner.

His Death Certificate indicates organic heart disease as cause of death. According to informant, son, Gail Gardner, James I. Gardner resided in Arizona 56 years, with last residence at 101 N. Mt.Vernon Street, Prescott, Arizona. Mt.View Cemetery records, Ruffner Funeral Home.
