THE STORY WHAT HAPPEN

A 25-year-old Flint man was killed "Akil" and two Flint men, both 22, were injured in a shooting that occurred about 1:25 a.m. today at the Beach House Bar and Grille, formerly Celebrations, at Beecher and Calkins roads.

One of the injured men was reported in critical condition at an unspecified area hospital while the other was slightly injured.

Police said no arrests had been made as of this morning Numbered markers tagged what appeared to be shell casings dotting the pavement near the entrance of the bar, where homicide investigators and evidence technicians from the state police crime lab in Bridgeport were on the scene today.

Police said the shooting occurred outside the bar but could not give further details. Lt. Jim Iacovacci said the bar typically has good security at the door and there hasn't been much trouble there in quite some time.

At 7 a.m. there appeared to be people still inside the bar, possibly being interviewed. Beach House owner Mike Jablonski was pacing around the parking lot outside the restricted area, but told reporters he was unable to comment.

The bar has been the scene of violence.

Last month, a Birch Run couple was carjacked at gunpoint.

And in 2005, the Liquor Control Commission closed it for two weeks because of at least four fights and brawls the previous year.

The facility then underwent a major renovation to turn it into a dinner and drinks club that catered to young professionals

FLINT TWP. - At the Beach House Bar & Grille on Tuesday, a Who's Who of Flint Township politicians schmoozed and celebrated Trustee Doug Carlton's election as township supervisor.

On Friday morning, three men were shot in the parking lot of the Beach House, leaving one dead and two injured.

Neighbors interviewed on Friday say the bar is a problem and should be cleaned up or closed. Michael Jablonski, owner of the Beach House, formerly Celebrations, said the club is not causing problems, and the shootings merely reflect society.

"I don't even think (the shootings) had anything to do with the club," Jablonski said. "This is a dinner club, very laid back."

But neighbor Toni Perkins said people party in the parking lot on most Thursdays and Saturdays, and she can often hear arguing and yelling.

"It's so loud, it sounds like the club is in my back yard," Perkins said. "(Friday morning) I heard the shots and then screaming and the screeching of tires."

Jablonski said the partying in the parking lot has been curtailed in the past year, although he acknowledged there are still problems.

"I don't know how you control it," he said Jablonski, adding that by the time bar personnel realize people are partying outside, the partiers take off before they are told to leave. "I wish I could control it, but I can't."

Police Lt. Jim Iacovacci said he had no comment yet about the status of the club, but he may in the future.

He had no further details Friday about the shootings, which killed Akil Goodman, 25, and wounded David Washington and Creg Curry, both 21, in the early morning hours on Friday. All three are Flint men
Residents also questioned the township's relationship with a club they say has been associated with crime. They point to the carjacking of a Birch Run couple last month and the fact that the club was shut down for a week last year due to liquor control violations. Neighbors have also complained to township officials about noise violations for years.

"I think it's a conflict of interest," said resident Ruth Jordan about the election parties. Former Supervisor Linda Barber's election party was at Celebrations in 2004.

"That's absolutely unfounded," Jablonski said. "There definitely isn't any favors coming my way

GOODNEWS

One of the men charged in the shootings Friday at a Flint Township bar had been acquitted just three months earlier in Genesee Circuit Court on charges that he'd attempted to kill a Flint man in 2004.

Chantantus S. Franklin, 20, of Flint, who is charged along with Defan D. Pringle, 24, of Flint with murder and assault with intent to murder in the shootings at the Beach House Bar & Grille, was found not guilty in the previous case by a jury in February.

"The prosecution's witnesses made a lot of conflicting statements about who did the shooting," attorney Michael J. Breczinski of Burton said about Franklin's acquittal in that case. "I thought the shooting was part of a running gun battle, and it was clear the jury had their doubts."
Franklin and Pringle were arrested over the weekend by Flint Township police after the shooting early Friday morning in the parking lot at Beach House, 3503 Beecher Road at Calkins Road, that killed Akil Goodman, 25, of Flint and wounded two others - David Washington, 21, who was reportedly in stable condition at a local hospital, and Greg Curry, 21, who was treated for his injuries and released, police said Monday.

The shootings in the parking lot followed an earlier fight inside the bar.

The two suspects were arraigned Sunday by Central District Judge Richard L. Hughes on charges of murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon and using firearms in the commission of a felony. They are being held without bond in the Genesee County Jail.

Township police officers ask anyone who has information to call police at (810) 600-3250.

Franklin had been charged in the wounding of a man in Flint that took place in September 2004 near Sarvis Park - a shooting that police and prosecutors alleged had involved Franklin and another man. In that case, Franklin was charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

But when the case went to trial before Genesee Circuit Judge Richard B. Yuille earlier this year, Franklin's lawyer said, the jury was faced with a confusing scenario of gunshots, conflicting witness statements and identifications, and at two different locations where guns had been fired.

"The assistant prosecutor wasn't too happy about that one," Breczinski said about Franklin being found not guilty.

Franklin and Pringle face a hearing on the Flint Township homicide Friday in Genesee County's Central District Court
