John Baird spent part of his boyhood in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada, and after his father died, his mother brought him and his siblings to settle in Zilwaukee. After becoming a U.S. citizen, he became interested in politics, and was elected township supervisor, state representative, state senator, delegate to the convention that wrote Michigan's 1908 Constitution, and headed the Michigan Conservation Dept. from 1921 to 1927. He also owned a farm and fishing cabin in southwestern Cheboygan County.
