John Dever's date/location of birth and names of his parents have never been determined, but he may have been born in Virginia and possibly served in Lord Dunmore's War. He had several children with his first wife (name unknown):

John acquired a considerable amount of land around Broadus Branch Road which was called Devers Road at the time and constructed a mill. In 1796, he was awarded guardianship of his niece and nephew, John "Jack" and Margaret. In 1799, he married for a second time to Anna Maxwell, the daughter of Thomas Maxwell, a wealthy resident of Madison County, Kentucky who had fought in Lord Dunmore's War.

John died in 1825 and his wife Anna died in 1827. The location of his grave is unknown but is believed to be in Madison County, KY.
