Robert was born in Los Angeles and lived there all of his life, where he graduated June 1965 from the Manual Arts Senior High School.
He enlisted in the Marines 1 September 1965, at a Los Angeles Recruiting Office.
Robert served in Alaska, North Carolina and Puerto Rico, before going to Vietnam.
When he arrived in Vietnam 6 February 1968, Robert was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
Robert was leading his men to a landing zone in the vicinity of Bridge 28 on Highway QL-9 and 7
kilometers southwest of Ca Lu Airfield, when a hostile booby trap mine exploded. He died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body.
Robert was single and served his country for 2 years,7 months and 19 days and had been in
Vietnam for 2 months and 14 days and was KIA #25,999.
Robert was 21 years, 10 months and 6 days old.
Survived by his mother, Zelmeire Clark and his brother, John Hawes of 153 E 50th St, Los Angeles, CA and his father, Robert Hawes of 933 Cecil St, Philadelphia, PA, and his sister, Gloria Hawes Rainey
and grandmother, Ruth Palmer of 2187 W 29th St, Los Angeles, CA.
