desertion. We would respectfully state that these men are from a portion of the county, isolated & are men of little or no education, and ignorant, and we learn that urgent appeals from the families of these men have been made to them of their suffering condition, and no one knows better than your Excellency, how ignorant men can be seduced and led astray by such reports. We feel well satisfied that your Excellency will act for the best interests of the country, but beg to ask - your kind sympathy in behalf of ignorant men, who are deeply penitent for their crimes, and who, promise faithfull [sic] service to their country in the] future. We give herewith the names, James B. [sic - V.] Gray, Monroe Overly, J. H. Watson, James Brinsfield, George W. Adams, (Jessee Caton) from Henry cty., Thomas R. Quinn, (Bartlett Stokes) [from] Henry [County], Tho. A. Hiler, James A. Hiler.
Citizens of Pittsylvania, from Bartons Brigade [following this are many signatures including that of H. W. Cole. It is known that Pvt. James V. Gray, 57th Virginia Infantry, from Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, who is on the list and was sentenced to death for desertion, was pardoned by President Davis].

Dr H W Cole Dies

Danville, Va, Jan 8 [1910] -- Dr H W Cole, for many years a prominent physician and druggist of Danville and thrice mayor of this city in the '70s, died at his home here today after a long illness. He was 79 years of age and a native of this county. Dr Cole was a surgeon in the Confederate army. He leaves two sons, Dr H W Cole, Jr, of the United States Navy and L D Cole of Oregon.
