John Bennett had a disagreement with Joseph W. Prindle over "water right" of the Mott Springs which they both shared. Mr. Bennett shot and killed Mr. Prindle whose cabin which was 200 yards north of Mott Springs. Mr Prindle was buried 40 ft south of the cabin site. John Bennett was taken by the Constable to Judge J.L "Dutch" Stafford's house. He was indicted for murder in the Spring term of Webster County court in 1873 (Goodspeed, History of Webster Co., page 201). He knew he would surely hang for murdering Mr. Prindle. After residing in the jail for a while, he decided that rather be convicted and most certainly hanged, he made a plan with his wife Polly to bring him some poison to the Webster Co jail. He drank it and soon after was dead. It is said that he was buried in his front yard by a Walnut tree--some 200 yards south of Mott Spring on a hill. There is a part of an old Walnut tree with a large rock by it, apparently marking his grave.
