She was born on Dec. 1, 1932, in Burlington, Vt., to Peter and Madeline Bosley.
She attended elementary and high school in Burlington, and the University of Vermont, where she met her future husband, Charles L. Hughes. On Sept. 7, 1953, they married in Malletts Bay and then drove to Philadelphia, Pa., where her husband was admitted to the Pennsylvania School of Dentistry.
Joyce supported her husband while he attended classes for four years. During this period, she also delivered two of her future seven children.
Following graduation, Charles was sworn into the Army Dental Corp. Joyce and Charles decided to make the Army a career which resulted in tours of duty to Ft. Dix, N.J., Panama, Washington, D.C., Ft. Lewis, Wash., Ft. Mead, Md., Ft. Benning, Ga., Vietnam, and Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., where Charles retired in 1975 as a Colonel.
Charles and Joyce together opened an Oral and Maxillary surgery practice in Sierra Vista, Ariz., for the next 14 years until 1989.
Joyce enjoyed bowling for many years, and traveling in their recreation vehicles with their children and pets during their final retirement.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Charles Lloyd Hughes (Col. U.S. Army, Ret.).
Interment will follow at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
