John David completed a Master of Arts degree in economics in 1932 and Emory University Law School in 1934. After passing the Georgia Bar, he joined the firm of Neely, Marshall and Green in Atlanta.
John D. was in ROTC through both high school and college. He was a first Lt. in the Army in 1935 and was a captain in the Army reserves in 1940 and in the Regular Army in 1941. He graduated from the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, KS, 12 April 1941. He was transferred to the General Staff in Washington, DC, where he served about a year. John served throughout World War II and rose to the (wartime) rank of Lt. Colonel. Later, in the 1950s, he served in the Army reserves and retired as a major.
After his World War II service, John D. returned to law and practiced law with the firm of Drennan and Brannon until his retirement in 1980. He and his wife, Demaris, retired to Turtle Cove, in Jasper County, Georgia. He resided in Jasper County at the time of his death at Emory University Hospital in Decatur, Georgia. He died of acute myelogenous leukemia. His remains were cremated and his ashes were buried in the columbarium at St. Simon's Episcopal Church in Conyers, Georgia.
