Griffin S. Dowell was born February 7, 1818 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, the son of George and Mary (Wimp) Dowell, natives of Virginia and Pennsylvania respectively. Elijah Dowell, his grandfather, came from Virginia to Kentucky around the early 1800's and settled in this county. Elijah died about 1824 or 1825. George (father of subject) was born in Bedford County, Virginia in 1788. He died March 30, 1842. The subject of this sketch was raised on a farm, and received but a limited education. He began life on the homestead, buying his brothers' and sisters' interests in the place, finally becoming the sole owner of the farm. He added to it at intervals and now owns 600 acres of fine land well improved, and is a successful farmer and stock raiser. He was married June 4, 1840, in Meade County, to Sarah K. Dowell, daughter of James and Barbara (Shacklett) Dowell. Mrs. Dowell was born March 1, 1823, the 7th of a family of 12 children. Mr. and Mrs. Dowell have the following children; Barbara G. (deceased), Malvina (Mrs. Bennett), Sarah E. (deceased), Rue B. (Archey), Hetty (Mrs. McCans), Roszina (deceased), Alsie, Monterey E. (deceased), Gustus T. and Georgie. Mr. and Mrs. Dowell are members of the Methodist Church, he is a Democrat. (Perrin, Breckinridge County History, p. 125)
